"When computer games were first copied on a regular basis
at the beginning of the 90s and the then small sector was threatened
by enormous economic damages, software developers started to implement
the first copy protection into games. Terms from the manual were
questioned such as "Please enter the third word of page nine,
paragraph 2, line 8". Back then, when memory was still scarce
(5.25" resp. 3.5" discs), this was the right measure.
To copy the whole manual and buy the corresponding blank discs would
have proven nearly as expensive as the game itself. In the mid-90s,
the CD-ROM was introduced into the market. CD burners were not affordable
for end consumers in these times. The industrial sector was sure that pirate copying
would come to an end. In the course of the decade, CD burners became
affordable for the end consumer as well. This was also true of blank
CDs. The industry was secure for some more time by using 700 MB
blank CDs, which were not available for the end consumers yet as
only 650 MB blank CDs could be purchased. Thus games requiring 700
MB could not be copied. This changed rapidly at the end of the 90s.
Almost every software could be copied as desired. By now this has
become a " real plague" for the film and music industry as well: pirate
copies.
